Union General Robert Ogden Tyler graduated from West Point in 1853. Among the 52 cadets in his graduating class that numbered 52, Tyler was ranked 22nd. Tyler saw extensive duty in the Eastern Theater of the US Civil War. In addition to his participation in General George B. McClellan's Peninsula campaign, Tyler served in the important battles of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Spotsylvania and Cold Harbor.

Union General Robert Seaman Granger graduated from West point in 1838. Among his graduating class of 45 cadets, Granger was ranked 28th. Granger had been captured in Texas early on in the war and paroled. He later returned to command a Kentucky militia.
Confederate General Alexander Robert Lawton graduated from West Point in 1839. Among his graduating class of 31 cadets, Lawton was ranked 13th. Lawton saw action at the Battle of Antietam and the Peninsula campaign. After being wounded he became the Confederate Quartermaster.

Confederate General Robert Seldon Garnett graduated from West Point in 1841. His graduating class of 52 cadets had Garnett ranked 27th. General Garnett was involved in the early battle in western Virginia. He was forced to retreat there, giving the Union a foothold in Virginia. He was also the first general to die in the war. He was killed shortly after the Battle of Rich Mountain in 1861.
