Sir Walter Raleigh didn't introduce the potato to Europe; the Spanish did that in 1536.

It isn't known when he personally first are a potato, but it has been said that he planted the first potatoes in Ireland, where he lived for seventeen years, spending seven years as Mayor of Youghal, but it's unlikely that story is true.

Raleigh was among those who popularized tobacco smoking in England, by example rather than by trade, and this is probably one of the things he is best known for.
