The Allies agreed to split Germany into four separate occupation zones at the Potsdam Conference in the summer of 1945. With the almost immediate onset of the Cold War, the separation became permanent, as the three controlled by the USA, UK and France joined in 1949 to become the Federal Republic of Germany (aka West Germany) and the zone controlled by the USSR eventually became the Democratic Republic of Germany (or East Germany). The split would last until 1990.

The same conference also agreed to split Berlin, as well as Austria and their capital city Vienna (Austria avoided a similar permanent split by agreeing to not join any sides in the Cold War), and that other territory that the Nazis conquered would be removed from Germany.
