Brigham Young officially became President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" Church) in December 1847, after the first Mormon Pioneer group arrived in Salt Lake City. However, many Church members began following him immediately after Joseph Smith's murder in the summer of 1844.
