The Mas or Carnival tradition began in the late eighteenth century by French plantation owners held balls and carnivals prior to the beginning of Lent. Since the slaves were forbidden from participating in the planters' celebrations, they developed their own known as 'Canboulay,' or 'burnt caramel.' Calypso music which used to be known as Kaiso also began during this period.
