Snow doesn't fall that often at Niagara falls in October. However, it has happened. Accumulation is rare. The first snow of the year is usually between the end of October and beginning of November.
It was just one of those situations where everything had to come together perfectly to be just cold enough for snow, and it happened. Assuming you're in the northeast, it was a nor'easter just like those in winter that bring snow. The setup of the atmosphere and track of the low pressure was really perfect to maximize the area that got some early season snow. Now it will warm up again and go back to being fall. Typically after these types of storms you'll have some very cold air, right? The air this time of year just can't get that cold. So the conditions were perfect briefly to get some snow, but now we're back to being october.
