He died due to old age, after having lived his remaining years prosperously with his sons and his sons' families in Egypt. He blessed each one of them, from Reuben to Benjamin and foretold their fortunes. He also blessed Joseph's sons Ephraim and Manasseh. Jacob was buried in the grave of his fathers Abraham and Isaac.
According to Genesis Chapter 47 Verse 28 Jacob was 147 years old.
And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years; so the days of Jacob, the years of his life, were a hundred forty and seven years.
This figure can be derived from reading The Bible as literally as possible and relying on Bishop Ussher's estimate that creation took place in 4004 BCE. The genealogies in the Book of Genesis indicate that Abraham was 100 years old when Isaac was born, and Isaac was exactly 60 years old when Jacob was born. Using the genealogies, we find that Jacob was born 1052 years after creation and, living for 147 years, died some 1199 years after creation. Adjusting for Ussher's year of creation, this means that Jacob lived approximately 2952-2805 BCE.
Even with information derived from biblical sources, it is worthwhile checking our facts carefully. The Book of Genesis is noteworthy for attributing to people ages - like 100 and 60 - that are easy to remember for oral story-telling, or which are based on the number 17. If we look at the lifespans of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the Bible says that:
These ages are so well-contrived that even if the Patriarchs were real, historical people, we can not simply accept that Jacob lived to 147 years old - in fact this discovery means we could not really accept the biblical lifespans of any of the ancients. We also should not accept Bishop Ussher's estimate for the year of creation, since he relied on the genealogies in the Bible. We therefore can not say when Jacob lived.
According to traditional chronology, Jacob was born in 1652 BCE. See also:
The Bible says that Jacob died 17 years after he migrated to Egypt, at the age of 147. The age attributed to him casts doubt on the accuracy of this account, not so much because it is unnaturally long, but because it forms part of a mumerical series beloved by ancient numerologists:
The traditional date for the birth of Jacob is 1652 BCE.

God chose Jacob over Esau based on His divine will and purpose, not because of anything Jacob or Esau had done. This decision was part of God's larger plan to fulfill His promises to Abraham and Isaac, and to establish the lineage through which Jesus Christ would eventually be born.
