Xenophon, a Greek general who lived more than 300 years before the birth of Christ, but more than 2,500 years after horses were first domesticated, is credited with being the author of the earliest known book about horsemanship still in existence. From the existence of this book we know riding was very well established as a mode of transportation by that time.
The horse, as we know it, has existed for approximately 1 million years, but the horse was not domesticated until about 5,000 years ago, 4,000 years after the dog. Until they were domesticated, horses were hunted for food. The date of domestication is calculated based on cave paintings of the Bronze Age. There is disagreement on whether horses were first used as draft animals or ridden.
Horses have been used for transportation from ancient times, until well into the 20th century in some places. Indeed, in a few places they are still used for primary transportation.
