Heroin really took off in the 1950's and 1960's. It has been around longer, and can be used, legally, as an analgesic (pain killer). It is, chemically, a cousin of morphine, and preferred to morphine in the clinical setting due to it's lesser side-effects. However, in the illicit form, it is purer, and much more dangerous and addictive.

The use of marijuana in many cultures has been popular for centuries. Even in America pre-1930s, marijuana was used in over the counter "remedies". However, the fear of marijuana introduced into the lives of Americans via Propaganda ads and false facts and was deemed illegal in 1931.

During the rebellious 1960's, the recreational use of marijuana became widespread and embraced by the counterculture. It was the 60's the not only marked the change in perspective for many Americans but also conceptualized the stereotype of the marijuana user.

In 1996, California became the first state to legalize marijuana and to this day, a total of 14 states legalized weed for medicinal purposes.

It became popular in the UK after a newspaper published the results of a 1971 court hearing. It was ruled out that naturally occurring mushrooms were not part of the act and were legal to possess and sell. Beforehand, it was considered a "poor man's LSD", since the effects are less intensive. But the mushrooms were free and there has been no harm since then.

Despite this, the majority of the population knew nothing about psilocybin and it was still not as popular ecstasy, alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, LSD and other recreationals. After the 3rd millennium, many people in the UK were selling fresh mushrooms in stores and over the internet, due to a loophole in the law. On July 2005, all magic mushrooms were outlawed to class A and the subject is rarely talked about openly these days.
