The way most people use the word, Mesopotamia is the name of a geographic region, not a specific empire or nation, so its history could be said to extend from around 10,000 B.C. to the modern day.

There was a Roman province called Mesopotamia that existed between the 2nd and 7th centuries, if that is what you are referring to.

The Sumerians and Akkadians ruled Mesopotamia from the beginning of human recorded history. After the Fall of Babylon in 539 BC, and its conquest by Alexander the great in 332 BC, it continued under the Parthian Empire and was a contested region from around 200 AD to 700 AD.

Eventually it was part of several Islamic caliphates, then the Ottoman Empire, then Iraq (1920).
