It is possible that the earliest recorded opinion of tobacco, especially the smoking of, as harmful to health would be the Counterblast to Tobacco written in 1604 by James I of England. In this, at the time anonymous, pamphlet he says that smoking is "hurtful to the health of the whole body" and affects the "inward parts of men [by] fouling and infecting them with an unctuous and oily kind of soot as hath been found in some great tobacco-takers that after their death were opened." He also notes that it is "a custom loathsome to the eye, hateful to the nose, harmful to the brain, dangerous to the lungs."
Cigarettes became popular in Europe and the U.S. between about 1900-1925. Before that the popular 'smokes' were the cigar and the pipe. In the 1920s it also became increasingly acceptable for women to smoke in their own homes ...
People have smoked cigars and pipes for thousands of years. However, the invention of the modern cigarette was the responsibility of first beggars in Seville, Spain, where cigars were produced. They rolled scrap tobacco in paper and smoked it that way. Cigarettes gained popularity among British soldiers during the Crimean War in the mid 1800's, when they found the Turkish cigarette to be more convenient. The final nail in the coffin of millions of smokers came with the invention of a machine that could roll cigarettes in the mid 1800's.
