The Christmas tree was originally the Yule tree and was decorated to celebrate the winter solstice in non-Christian religious traditions in eastern and northern Europe. When German immigrants came to the United States in the 1800s, they brought the tradition of decorating an evergreen tree with candles at Christmas time with them, and it has spread throughout American culture since then.
Putting presents under the tree started as a pagan ritual. It represents putting children under a burning tree for sacrifice.
There are lots of trees in Canada. As for decorated trees, there are many trees in Canada which are decorated for Christmas. And how they are decorated depends on who is decorating them. They can be decorated in all kinds of ways.
Some French traditions at Christmas: bring in and decorate a Christmas tree (likely to be a fir tree); have the children prepare their letter to "le Père Noël" (Father Christmas / Santa Claus) and put their shoes underneath the tree; have a family gathering with a nice evening meal; for observant Christians, go to church to attend the midnight Christmas mas; on the day after, get up in time to watch the children find their Chirstmas presents under the tree and unwrap them with excitement. Enjoy the holiday for the week.
