an idiot.
Reading was invented by the earliest human societies, when groups began to use pictures, drawings, and images to represent real-life places and things.
For example, even without a written language, two people could both identify a squiggly line as representing a river on a crude map. Later, pictograms and letter symbols replaced the more obvious representations.
Reading and writing were obviously invented concurrently, as until something is first written there is no reason to invent reading and writing is of no useful purpose unless it can be read.
It is generally agreed that true writing of language (not only numbers) was invented independently in at least two places: Mesopotamia (specifically, ancient Sumer) around 3200 BC with cuneiform on clay tablets and Mesoamerica around 600 BC. Several Mesoamerican scripts are known, the oldest being from the Olmec or Zapotec of Mexico.
Other writing systems (e.g. Chinese, Egyptian) seem to have been developed by cultural diffusion and the distribution with modification of earlier ones.
1829, Braille Code relies on embossing to allow blind people to read and write.

The way you approach reading a book is a personal choice. Some people begin my reading the book jacket information and introductory material. Others dive right into the story.
