Personally, I like Eric Hobsbawn reference to The short twentieth century, 1914-1989. In retrospect, it seems to have the century of ideologically motivated social engineering on a vast scale - including the Armenian and Jewish holocausts, the Soviet purges and the Gulag, the killing fields of Cambodia and the enormous slaughter in China orchestrated by Mao. Obviously, some of the social engineering was benign, like the development of a fairly comprehensive welfare state in many European countries. The 20th century was also characterized by two exceptionally devastating wars. Despite all this, there were also positive developments.
