Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire in roughly 393 A.D. by Emperor Theodosius. Emperor Constantine ended the persecution in 313 A.D with the Edict of Milan. It wasn't until roughly 80 years later until it became the Official religion of Rome in about 393 A.D.

Constantine's decision to end the persecution was influenced by his mother, a devout Christian.

The Catholic Church traces its roots to the Church founded by Jesus Christ. The Church began when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles and the Blessed Virgin Mary at Pentecost, 50 days after Jesus rose from the dead and 10 days after he ascended to heaven. (In fact, the Catholic Church teaches that the Church Jesus founded subsists within the Catholic Church.)

According to a Wikipedia article, Ignatius, bishop of Antioch, is responsible for the first known use of the Greek word "katholikos", meaning "universal," "complete" and "whole" to describe the church in his "Letter to the Smyrnaeans" in about the year 107 A.D. Ignatius said,

"

Wherever the bishop appears, there let the people be; as wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the catholic Church. It is not lawful to baptize or give communion without the consent of the bishop. On the other hand, whatever has his approval is pleasing to God. Thus, whatever is done will be safe and valid.

"

It is from the word katholikos that the word "catholic" comes. When Ignatius used the word "catholic", he used it as if it were a word already in use to describe the Church. This has led many scholars to conclude that the term "catholic Church" may have been in use as early as the last quarter of the first century A.D.

The Catholic Church was born from the side of Christ when it was pierced by a lance while He hung dead on the cross, and water and blood poured out, symbolizing the Eucharist and Baptism. Then it was officially shown to the world fifty days later on the feast of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles.

What did the Roman Church and Orthodox Church become after they split?

Roman Catholic AnswerThe Catholic Church remained the Catholic Church. It cannot "become" anything else, as Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to guide it until the end of time. It will remain His Body, it will remain One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic. The Orthodox Church became schismatic (they are in schism from the Catholic Church).

Are women allowed to become Roman Catholic priests?

No. Only men are allowed to become Priests in the Catholic Church. Women however can become Nuns. It's just Catholic, not Roman Catholic. Roman is an epithet first commonly used in England after the protestant revolt to describe the Catholic Church. It is never used by the official Catholic Church.

If a non-Catholic man married a Catholic woman in a Catholic church and the marriage ends in divorce how does the Catholic Church view this marriage and can the man later become a Catholic?

He can certainly become Catholic. Divorce does not prevent one from participating in the Church in any way. The Church sees him as continuing to be involved in a nonsacramental, but valid, marriage. What he cannot do is to *remarry* since that would be adultery in the eyes of the Church.
