Another answer from our community:

True Christianity never divided. Only pseudo-Christianity divides - - thus it is really not Christianity at all; because true Christianity does not divide. Christ Jesus keeps his house in order. His house is not a haven of division.

The label 'Christianity' is used too loosely; and thus all the confusion.

1 Cor 1:10 (Amplified Bible): "But I urge and entreat you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you be in perfect harmony and full agreement in what you say, and that there be no dissensions or factions or divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in your common understanding and in your opinions and judgments."

(Easy to Read Version): ". . . You should not be divided into different groups."

(Philip's): ". . . not allow yourselves to be split up into parties. All together you should be achieving a unity in thought"

As we read in Paul's epistles, Christianity has been divided from the very earliest times. Some scholars even believe that Christianity formed from the amalgamation of two quite separate movements, which they term the Jesus Movement and the Christ Cult.

Also from early times there has been a division between Gnostic Christianity and the 'centrist' or proto-Catholic-Orthodox branch of the faith. The Gospel of Thomas is seen as evidence of the earliest Gnostic Christians.

The Coptic Church of Alexandria broke away from the centrist mainstream in the fifth century.

The schism that resulted in the Roman Catholic and Orthodox Churches occurred in 1054 CE. The Coptic, Jacobite and Nestorian denominations continued to exist outside the mainstream control.

Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the door of the castle church in Wittenberg in 1517, eventually bringing about further division and the Protestant Reformation. Subsequent splits have led to the Baptist movement, Adventist movements, Jehovah's Witnesses, Mormons and various other denominations.

Constantine, the first Christian emperor of Rome, was dismayed at the disunity he found in the Christian Church. Christianity has always divided and will continue to do so.
