  • It started in Holland. When a child was bad they got a lump of coal, but if they were good they got a small toy, cookies or candy.
  • There was a pervasive belief in the mid 19th century that if you were poor it was because you or your ancestors did bad things. They were poor because God was punishing them.
  • Most of England and Europe was powered by coal. Most household furnaces were coal burning. They would take coal and put it in pans under the bed to stay warm at night. So coal had value. If you were a poor kid, you were lucky to get coal that you could use to keep yourself warm on cold winter nights. The rich had nice warm houses and lots of goodies in their stockings but the poor, who were so as punishment from God for being bad were lucky to get coal.

This is why they turn bad from Jesus:

Because of the naughty children and they naughty children parents warned them that the childrens parents got mad because they have been really naughty and the children sometimes got into trouble because they draw on walls, Not doing what there told, not doing homework, not listening, getting bad grades, not going to school, driving cars by making there parents very rage, being loud at night and not having money dollars to order and buy stuff online without a credit card and signing up for an extra account, not doing there job correctly, getting busted, not paying attention at school, destroying peoples office, getting grounded from computers, downloading on computers without asking, unplugging schools pc, hitting peoples walls, & hurting people, sometimes they get have punishment from there parents and get into peoples food and also they lie to other people and make someone not happy and actually the parents kids get blamed and their gonna get ashamed by their parents and Santa Claus keeps watching them and puts them on the naughty list by Santa
