Your question makes it sound like we died. When the first explorers arrived on the shores of North America the mi'kmaq had been here for a very long time. At the time of first contact with European explorers in the 16th and 17th centuries the Mi'kmaq lived in the region now known as the Maritime provinces. Prior to that there is evidence the Mi'kmaq greeted the vikings and traded with them too. The tribe is still living in the same areas today.
