The Storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789 marks the official start of the French Revolution, but the nation had become increasingly unstable over a period of twenty to thirty years beforehand.

The French Revolution was partly inspired by the American Revolution (1775-1783) and by writings on populist themes of democratic government. Dissatisfaction had undermined the rule of King Louis XVI as he sought new taxes to pay France's wartime costs. The General Assembly of May 1789 led to open discord by the Third Estate, those outside the nobility. Although many sought only changes to the monarchy, others advocated its complete overthrow. Many feared that the king would close down the National Assembly at Versailles in June. As Parisian rioting spread on July 14, some sought the arms stored within the Bastille, leading to open conflict with the King's guards. Soon popular rebellions had sprung up across France, and many government officials were attacked or killed.

There were two events leading up to the revolution.

The first was the storming of the Bastille on July 14th 1789.

The second was the Tennis Court Oath.

When Louis XVI had to convoke the Estates General, the third estate (the bourgeoisie) ordered to double their numbers in the Estates General, because the majority of France existed of Bourgeoisie. The others 2 estates (the nobility and the clergy) did not agree with this, but the King gave in to the third estate. When the Estates General met, they had on one occasion locked out the third estates members. They went to a nearby tennis court at Versailles and swore they would not dissemble until a constitution for France would be drawn up and accepted.

Both occasions were significant for the beginning of the French Revolution

The French felt that they had a superior claim to the lands of the Ohio Valley, especially the territories that are now part of western Pennsylvania. The French leaders in Quebec sent military parties to discourage the Indians from trading with the British in the region. Finally, in 1753, the French built forts in the area and were challenged by the British colonial militia under George Washington. Hostilities erupted on July 3, 1754, after a massacre of some French by Indians they had previously attacked. Washington was forced to surrender and withdraw, and soon both sides were sending reinforcements to fight in Pennsylvania and ultimately in Canada. Indian tribes were allied with both sides, with the French supported by those whose land was imperiled by the British expansion into the interior.

By war's end in 1763, the French lost Canada and the majority of their New World empire to the British, but they would get their revenge by aiding the colonials in the Revolutionary War, only fifteen years later.
