The Greek Olympics date back to 776 BC. The games were held to honor the high god of Olympus, Zeus, and were held every four years in Olympia, a valley believed to be located near Mt. Olympus, the home of the Gods. As a sign of respect, a special truce was called prior to the games to assure safe travel for all participants and visitors.
