Protection of all poor and weary pilgrims travelling from Europe to the Promised Land occurred after the First Crusade in the 11th century. Hughes de Payen, a Frankish knight, petitioned Bernard of Clairveaux to ask the Pope to create a military order. Originally it consisted of nine knights who took a pledge to give up their families and their wealth in order to become warrior monks. Their code was written by Bernard who modelled it after the Cistercian order's. Patrols around Jerusalem and the rest of Palestine were made by two knights at a time. Originally the name of the order was The Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon.
The Knights Templar were founded around 1119 to protect pilgrims traveling to the Holy Land after the First Crusade. Initially, they were a small group of knights tasked with safeguarding pilgrims on their journeys to Jerusalem.
The Knights Templar were founded in the early 12th century to protect Christian pilgrims traveling to Jerusalem during the Crusades. They also evolved to become a powerful military order supporting the Christian kingdoms in the Holy Land.
