In 63 BC, Pompey the Great added the territories of the mid east to the Roman possessions. Among them was Jerusalem and the territory that today is known as the Holy Land. However, the Jews kept their independence and were considered a client kingdom of Rome. It was not until 6 AD that Augustus made Judaea a province.
The Romans dominated what is now called "the holy land". There were uprisings against Roman rule, and people were looking for the Messiah prophesized in the Bible to lead them against their enemies.
