Executive Order #9981, issued by Harry Truman, officially desegregated the United States armed forces. It was issued in July of 1948. Full desegregation was not a reality until the Korean War in 1950.

The nurses obtained the assistance of First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt. As a result, Mabel Staupers, and the National Association of Colored Graduate Nurses played a large part in the desegregation of the military.
