Since there was no declaration of war, and there was no "open" invasion into South Vietnam (like what happened in the Korean War)...there is NO STARTING DATE. Only the beginning of US presence and the beginning of US casualties; which started around 1955/1956.
To head off the next question before it's even asked: WWII was the last US declared war; no US war since WWII was declared. In addition, the US Civil War (also known as the American Civil War 1861-1865 was NOT a declared war).
