In September 1780. Having "pacified" South Carolina the British began to move north. They moved in three columns. The central column was the main body under Cornwallis, which took Charlotte September 26. Charlotte at that time was a village of about twenty houses and a courthouse. The two flanking columns were lighter, quick-moving scouting forces under Patrick Ferguson and Banastre Tarleton. There was skirmishing earlier in September west of Charlotte between Ferguson's force and Patriots. These movements eventually resulted in the complete destruction of Ferguson's force at King's Mountain October 7, and of the near total annihilation of Tarleton's at the Cowpens, January 17, 1781. Cornwallis pushed on northward with his remaining force in pursuit of Patriot commander Nathaniel Greene and fought the Battle of Guilford Courthouse March 15, 1781, near present-day Greensboro. This Pyrrhic victory caused Cornwallis to remark "another such victory would ruin us".
