The Common Era, used for dates CE, is an alternative name for dates commonly listed as AD, which stands for Anno Domino, which means The Year of Our Lord. Whatever you call it, this counts years from the date tradition says is the birth of Jesus. Modern scholarship seems to concur that the traditional date is wrong by about 4 years.

When people give dates CE (in the common era) or BCE (before the common era), they are recognizing that the dating system we use is accepted and used for civil purposes by many people who are not Christians and do consider AD (anno Domini, literally "the year of our Lord") or BC (before Christ) appropriate ways to designate years because Jesus is not their lord nor do they consider him to be the Messiah, which is what Christ means.
