Common Era has a complicated history, and it began not as a replacement for AD/BC, but as a way of referring to the era AD represented.
It was created by Christians in the 16th century in Europe as a means of distinguishing the Dionysian Christian era from the Regnal era, the era dated from the year that the current King began reigning.
Centuries later, Jews began to say "before the common era" instead of "before Christ", because they did not want to call Jesus (Yeshua) "Christ", which actually means "Anointed One" or "Messiah".
Once political correctness became rampant in America and Europe beginning around the 1980s, "before the common era" was abbreviated to simply "BCE" and began to be used as a replacement for "BC" directly, and "CE" was then used to replace "AD".
