In the late 1800's, the human race started more with spiritualism, and even before that, there was always the concept of where we went when we died. And what if you stayed here after you died? So, one could easily assume the concept of ghosts began very early in human development. Because some of the most ancient societies had 'demons' and 'monsters'.
