The founding father of Maryland was Lord Baltimore also known as George Calvert but as he died before being granted the charter his son Cecil is credited with obtaining it.

Maryland was named in honour of the Queen Consort of King Charles l named Henrietta Maria.

It was intended to be a place where English Catholics could escape persecution.

The first european settlers began to take up residence in 1634 however for thousands of years before this Native Americans had inhabited this area and in 1498 John Cabot had explored this region.
