There were native Americans in Wisconsin for about 10,000 years. The earliest people were the Oneota. These people eventually became the Sauk, Fox, Chippewa, Potawatomi, and Ho-Chunk (Winnebago). French explorer, Jean Nicolet, did not come to Wisconsin until 1634.
