Julius Caesar conducted two expeditions in southeast of England in 55 BC and 54 BC. Emperor Claudius sent the general Aulus Plautus to invade Britannia with four legions in 43 AD and then joined the invasion with reinforcements and war elephants. The conquest of northern England and much of Scotland was carried out by the general Agricola in 71 BC under emperor Vespasian. The Romans then withdrew from Scotland and built Hadrian's Wall under emperor Hadrian in 122 AD.
