There are three important dates concerning the question of when the Declaration of Independence was signed: July 2, July 4 and August 2, 1776. July 2 is the date on which the 2ndContinental Congress approved the resolution that the 13 united colonies were now free and independent states; the Secretary of the Congress, Charles Thomson, no doubt signed the resolution as part of the Congressional record. John Adams, the second president of the US, was sure that July 2 would be celebrated as Independence Day. But he hadn't considered that the formal statement declaring independence would not be approved in written form until July 4. On that date, the Declaration of Independence was indeed signed, but by two people (at most). John Hancock, President of the Congress (whose position was much more like the Speaker of the US House than today's President of the US) signed it to make it official, and odds are that Charles Thomson affixed his own signature as a matter of custom. But the actual signing of the Declaration, as we think of it today, did not take place until it appeared as the well-known parchment-paper copy on August 2, 1776. The general consensus of experts appears to be that the 56 signatures found on the document were placed on it that day.
July 4, 1776 is when is was signed.
