∙ 11y agoThe trans Atlantic slave trade took place from 1550 to 1850. For many centuries before Europeans and Colonists became involved in the commerce of African people, there was already a thriving trade in African slaves in many Arab nations, and the Roman and Egyptian empires.
The crossroads at Timbuktu (now in Mali), founded in the twelfth century by Tuareg nomads, was a thriving center for trade in salt, gold, spices, and slaves. Timbuktu remained a major trade center for over 300 years. Timbuktu was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988.

The justifications of slavery during the eighteenth century were little to none until close to the end.
