Never. It would have made the Confederate Army stronger if they had, but racist attitudes in the Confederacy did not allow their enlistment. There were regiments of free black soldiers who wore gray uniforms and fought for the South, but they were militia units and not officially a part of the Confederate Army.

Not till the very last weeks of the war - too late to test whether Confederate units could work with black recruits.
