Vasco da Gama led an expedition of four ships sent by the Portuguese to sail, for the first time, all the way from Portugal around Africa and then across the Indian ocean, in order to reach India, source of many valuable spices. The expedition left Lisbon on July 8, 1497. They reached the southern tip of Africa, the Cape of Good Hope, on November 22, 1497. The expedition then sailed northwards partway up the coast of Africa before turning east across Indian Ocean. They crossed the Indian Ocean in 23 days, and reached Calcutta, India on May 20, 1498.
