Dogs don't technically have "periods." They go into oestrus or heat, and often have a bloody vaginal discharge during this time, but this is not quite the same thing as menstruation. For one thing, it occurs before, rather than after, ovulation; ovulation in dogs occurs at the end of oestrus.
Dogs usually go into heat about twice a year starting between 6 and 24 months of age. Unlike some other species, domestic dogs have no particular "mating season" during which this happens; it can be at any time of year, though generally 6-7 months from the last occurence.
