about every three years - but well maintained batteries can last a lot longer e.g. 7 years. However the lifetime of batteries varies massively based on many factors and cannot be accurately stated.

A warning sign the battery should be replaced is that the vehicles lighting systems dims excessively and is sluggish to start.

Batteries should be replaced when any of the following are true:

  • The voltage is below 12.6v an hour after a full charge (e.g. after a long journey).
  • The CCA is below your vehicles minimum (a garage can perform that test).
  • The reserve capacity is 60% or less of the listed AH. This matters less than the previous two points. Replacement should still be considered if the vehicle dependant on the battery is using electrical systems for extended periods without the engine running.
