The use of rifles in hunting is far more efficient than using a bow; it it much easier to strike and fatally wound a deer with a rifle than with a bow. As such over a set period of time more animals could be killed with a rifle than with a bow. If rifle season was as long as bow season many more deer would be bagged, which would put a strain on the deer population. Thus, bow season is longer than rifle season because rifle hunting does much more "damage" than does bow season.

The hunting season for Haywood County, North Carolina, begins for bow and arrow from September 7 to October 3 and then October 12 to November 21. Muzzleloader for deer season is from October 5 to October 10. Gun for deer season is from November 23 until December 12.
