Its a belt but its the rollers that fail check out www.v6technicians.co.uk they know all bout this engine It has a timing belt. Only some diesels or the 2.2 petrol Vectra's have timing chains.
A timing belt on a 2004 Vectra GSI 3.2 should be changed at about 50,000 miles. The timing belts can be purchased at any auto parts store.

sounds like your a tooth out on the belt , recheck the pins and marks.

it is recommended that timing belts on petrol vauxhalls be changed every 40,000 miles
i would recomend that you have the timing belt changed every 55k but they will last up till 70k , 60k seems to be the mileage that most have it done , but not all vectras have a timing belt !!! some such as the 2.2sri150 have a timing chain !!! hope this helps
