This is the NEW MOON phase. Sometimes it can pass directly in front of the Sun, whereupon it is a Total/Partial Eclipse.

The other phases of the Moon are ;-

  1. New Crescent(waxing) ; seen in the evening sky, about 3 or 4 days after the New Moon.

  2. First Quarter(waxing) ; seen in the evening/ early night sky, about 7 days after the New Mon.

  3. New/First Quarter Gibbous(waxing); seen in the early night sky , about 11 days after the New Moon.

  4. Full Moon; seen in the night sky ,14 days days after New Moon. It is full and round and glowing.

  5. Full/Old/Last Quarter Gibbous(waning); See in the late night sky, 17 days after the full moon.

  6. Old/Last Quarter(waning); seen in the late night/early morning sky, about 21 days after the New Moon.

  7. Old/Last Crescent(waning) ; seen in the early morning sky, about 25 days after New Moon.

  8. New Moon again. seen in the day time, about 28/29 days after the previous New Moon.

NB In good clear atmospheric conditions, when, in the evening, the crescent Moon is visible, you may see the 'ghost' of the full circle of the Moon. It is said of a first crescent Moon ; 'The New Moon , with the Old Moon in here arms'.

Conversely in the morning ; ' It is the Old Moon, with the New Moon in here arms'.

Hope that helps!!!!

The Last Quarter, the Waning Crescent, the New Moon, the Waxing Crescent, and the First Quarter.

The Moon spends one-half of its orbit on the same side of the Earth as the Sun, and during that time it always appears half illuminated or less. The Gibbous phases and the Full Moon occur when the Moon is on the opposite side of the Earth from the Sun, and the Moon is never less than half illuminated.

we would see the moon's shadow: a dark circle in the sky and very little light during the day because the moon's blocking it.

@ night though, you see just the dark spot with a yellowish, but strong glow "outlining" it

When they're lined up with Earth in the middle the night half of Earth sees the full moon. The new moon phase is when they're lined up with the moon in the middle, although the new moon is also defined as the time a day or two later when the beginning edge of the crescent first becomes visible.

It would be a full moon, even on fairly rare occasions when the allignment is good enough for the earth to put a shadow on it (lunar eclipse).

In what phase is the moon when you do not see it?

The phase in which the moon is not visible from earth is called the "new" moon. It happens when the moon is aligned between the sun and the earth (every 28 days), which causes the side of the moon that we usually see to be in shadow.

What does the phase on the moon you see depend on?

The phases of the moon are dependant on the relative positions of the sun, moon and earth. It's the angle between the view-lines to the sun and the moon, with you at the vertex of the angle. The phase of the moon you see depends on how much of the sunlit side of the moon faces earth.

What phase is the moon in when you can't see it?

All phases of the moon can be viewed from the earth. The moon is easier to see on a clear night, though the moon can also be seen during the day, depending on its orbit, and how bright the sunlight is.
