How does a heater control valve work in a car?

A heater control valve is simply a water valve which allows more or less water to circulate through the heater core, depending on how much the valve is opened. When the engine warms up it heats coolant (mostly water) in the water jacket of the engine. To keep the engine from overheating, the water pump circulates water through the radiator once the engine temperature reaches the set-point of the thermostat. When it's cold outside the engine STILL reaches a temperature that allows you to make use of the engine heat when you open the water valve of the heater. Heater control valves take many forms but basically they all do the same thing; they open to allow heated engine coolant to circulate through the heater core or they close to stop the coolant from flowing. Heater control valves can be manual (cable controlled or even lever controlled), vacuum (which allows the engine vacuum to control the position of the heater control valve based on where you set the control knob) or electrical which allows for greater flexibility and even allows the auto manufacturer to connect the heater controls to a computer or other electronic control device.

A block heater for that vehicle would be an option. If it came equipped with a block heater the cord would be found close to the battery.

Where is the heater control valve located on a 1997 Dodge Caravan?

open hood and directly on firewall is black hose coming up and looping down. It is about 3/4 in inside diameter. there is a little plastic fitting in this hose which is a valve which is controlled by air vacuum. It controls the hot water being diverted from the engine to the heater. you can pull off the vacuum hose and see if it has vacuum and you can manually actuate the valve with your finger reach around the back of this item and stick your finger through the hole and slide the valve up...have someone turn the heat on and off engine not running but with the accessories switch on key switch on you should feel or hear the valve actuating. Actually, when the engine is not running, there is no vacuum. Engine must be running for the heater control valve to open and close if it is vacuum activated. Some heater control valves are operated by cables. These can open and close without cranking the engine.

97 gmc Yukon My question is that your heater in the truck does not push out any air from the vents AND if any air does comes out it is warm not really that hot?

The vacuum tube to the heater control is broken in two or cracked...usually in the engine compartment. It's a black, hard plastic tube or pipe about 3/16" od. Without vacuum, the heater control cannot open and close dampers to direct air flow.

Where is the heater control valve on a 1994 dodge caravan?

Where are the inlet and outlet heater hoses located?

The outlet from the engine that feeds hot coolant into the heater core is usually (but not always) located close to the thermostat. The return hose from the heater core usually returns into the water pump.

Why wouldn't you have heat in your ram250 van when the hoses into and out of the heater core get hotwarm after idling even tho the water in the radiator doesnt get warm?

Sounds like your thermostat is done for. The water in the hoses is probably heating up from being close to the hot engine. This continued to happen to me after i replaced the thermostat twice thinking maybe i had bought a bad thermostat turns out it was the heater core. Both the front and back were pluged.
