Why does hibernation take place?

Hibernation is a lowering of the metabolism, either forced, as in the case of cold-blooded animals which are in really cold climates, or as a survival mechanism, such as in the case of animals which hibernate during winter months. Food is a fuel, and the higher a metabolism, the more food a body consumes. Some animals which live in extreme climates, where food is really scarce during some months, will tend to eat all they can before to store energy in their muscles and body fat, before going into hibernation. When they lower their metabolism, they lower the rate of energy consumption, and so can survive a winter. If they didn't hibernate, they would use up that stored energy much quicker and die of starvation.
