Grant was the general in command of all union (i.e. Yankee) forces at the end of the Civil War.
Although President Lincoln had appointed Major General Henry W. Halleck to command Union forces in the West, Halleck had never personally commanded a large army. Halleck's major strength was that of a tactician. After the Union victory at the Battle of Shiloh, Halleck lost confidence in General Grant. Immediately after the Battle of Shiloh, he left his headquarters in St. Louis to command the armies of generals Grant, Buell and Pope. Halleck was then personally in command of a force of over 100,000 troops.
He ran for the office and was well known for his command of Union forces in the Civil War.
William T. Sherman
President Abraham Lincoln, as Commander-in-Chief, was in command of the Union forces in the US Civil War. He had a number of Generals under him, ultimately Ulysses S. Grant was the General who managed the defeat of Southern forces under General Lee, and thus, eventually the defeat of the Confederacy.
The Commanding General of the Union Army during the US Civil War was General U.S. Grant. He was not the first commander of these forces, but he was appointed by Presedent Lincoln to command the U.S. forces prior to the end of the war. General Grant later became the 18th U.S. President.
From Shiloh through the Vicksburg campaign and the Battle of Lookout Mountain, Sherman served as Grant's subordinate in the Union Army of the Tennessee. When Grant assumed overall command of Union forces and moved to Washington, Sherman took command of all Union forces in the West (West of the Appalachians) and began his campaign of total war known as Sherman's March to the Sea.
