An organism adapts to conditions in the environment when it develops a behavioral or a physical characteristic that helps it to survive. ex: Monkeys having a long tail to swing on trees while they use their hands and feet to gather food or a skunks' horrible smell makes larger animals choose something else to eat.
The enviornment doesn't select the animals the animals select their enviornment or they evolved over millions of years to adapt to certain types of enviornments that they choose to live in. An example of this is the mud fish who can breathe on land or in water they evolved because their enviornment had droughts if they had not evolved they would have died off and became extinct.
You don't really have to be a certain age to choose your own doctor.
