Attention lines are used when you want a message to be directed to an organization as a whole, rather than a specific person. However, if no contact name is given, the message may not be read by an appropriate person and passed on, limiting its effectiveness, or creating a delayed response. For example, the first person to read the correspondence may not send it on to a person with the necessary concern for the problem. A contact name aids (hopefully) in getting the message out, and allows you to follow up the matter if necessary. Phrases such as "Ladies and Gentlemen" are most often used as the Salutation when an attention line is used. Simplified letter styles would omit this item, and this is probably a preferred method.
