Thye inflammatory response of the body is usually an important response to minimize damage and help prepare the tissues for healing. But that can be a problem rather than helpful protection when it goes too far and doesn't know when to stop. This happens when we sprain our ankle. A little inflammation is all it needs, but the body wants to immobilize it by making it so painful that you can't walk. Truth is, functionally you can walk on it if you do it carefully. That is why icing works so well, it keeps the imflammation down to the functional healing level and keeps it from going way overboard with the unecessary pain.
It depends on the particular problem you are experiencing. as a rule of thumb anti inflammatory. analgesics and mild exercise for the muscles surrounding the effected joint can be helpful.
