Millard Fillmore was president of the USA when Joseph Swan started working on the lightbulb around 1850. Franklin Pierce then became president, followed by James Buchanan, who was in office at the time Swan took his first patent out for an improved electric light bulb.
A couple more people gained the office of president in the USA: Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson. In 1875 however, Swan returned to the problem of a sustainable electric light bulb, by which time Ulysses S. Grant was the US president. Rutherford B. Hayes succeeded him though, by the time Joseph Swan got a patent for his latest version of the bulb in 1878.
By 1879, Swan had again improved his bulb and received another patent on it. The following year, he began installation of the bulbs throughout England, starting the Swan Electric company in 1881.
By the end of that year, a theatre in London called the Savoy became the first publically-used building to be lit entirely by electric light, provided by Joseph Swan. By that time, James A. Garfield had been president, was assassinated, and replaced by Chester A. Arthur.
