Yes, have it checked every time the belt is replaced. Especially if yours is one of the ones made with a hard PVC plastic, which in some climates, can become warped over time by extreme heat/cold.

Check to make sure the belt is routed around the compressor pulley. Also check the wiring connector at the compressor in case it was dislodged.

That is what I am doing. I have a 2004 Ram 2500 4x4 w/ 5.7L HEMI and am replacing the tensioner. There are 80K miles on the rig and I maintain it meticulously. Troubleshooting the consistent squeaking after the belt r&r I decided it is the tensioner and my mechanic conferred. Oreilly's has the OEM part for $45 (DODGE HOUSE IS $75.00) and it will take 20 minutes to change the tensioner and reinstall the new belt.

Getting the serpentine belt onMost vehicles don't require you to remove parts to install the serpentine belt. Most vehicles have a diagram on the hood or under the hood showing the proper alignment and direction of a serpentine belt. There is a tensioner that must be pulled to allow you to install the belt. With out a 1/2" Socket wrench you will not be able to put the belt on your car. If you don't have a diagram and cant find the tensioner pulley I suggest asking a mechanic for help. Its not time consuming if you know what your doing. I can change my serpentine belt in 10 mins MAX, on my Lincoln caddy and x terra. None of them require removing a part.

A 97 SC2 does not have a timing belt, it has a timing CHAIN. The timing chain tensioner is INSIDE the engine, behind the oil pump. Replacing the timing chain tensioner is a complex process, requiring substantial engine dis-assembly, and you should replace the timing chain and sprockets at the same time.HOWEVER...If, as I suspect, you are being told that you need to replace the serpentine belt tensioner, it's a relatively simple process, back off the old tensioner, remove the belt (may as well put on a new one when you're done), a couple bolts and the old tensioner is gone, then put the new one in it's place, tighten it up and install the new belt. Probably a 15 minute process if you have all of the tools and supplies with you. NOTE, it will be much easier if you remove the passenger side tire, pull out the inner fender liner (for access to the engine), and work on it from there.
