There is a special tool that releases the wire clips that hold them on.

From what i have heard there is a couple clips towards the front of the console. after they are removed you can slide the entire console back to release the hooks securing it to the ceiling.
To get to the ashtray bulb on a 1997 Z71, the console top needs to be removed. First remove the ashtray from its holder. Then, remove the clips on the sides holding the console top on.
Hi, Start by lifting the arm rest lid and then grabing the console from the arm rest end pull sharply upwards. The centre console is only held in by clips. As you make your way towards the ashtray unclip the power jacks to the S(sport) button and the traction control button. As you are replacing the ashtray you will need to remove the cigar lighter. This will also need unplugging while you are removing the console. The ashtray is screwed to the console with 2 small torx. Refit in the opposite way. 2 clips on either side of cover push forward then out
I had to use duck tape till I could order all new clips from a Toyota dealer. They were EXPENSIVE too.
1. Take out your center console 2. Remove the floor pan grommet mounting nuts 3. Remove the retaining clips and pry the cable off (If the bushings are shot, there won't be much prying needed) That's all there is to it.
The molding around the climate control and the radio pulls out then you carefully pull the console out making sure not to snap the clips if you are tring to replace the radio you only have to take the molding off.
with a flat screwdriver pop the clips off of the top and bottem and they come right off, replacing is easier just position the part in place and snap the new clips on
