You should really only write in first-person when either writing a narrative or persuasive as a persuasive technique. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech is a good example. It denotes that you personally have a connection to the subject and says to the audience that your feelings about the topic are personal. It's rarely used in professional writing except for the persuasive form.
Do NOT use first-person when writing about an event in history(even if the assignment is your opinion), a research paper, or an analysis of a book, document or event.
